It’s hard to know what it says about us as a nation other than that we seem to like foxes, strange US dudes who pretend to be animals, beer and Harlem Shakes. Oh, and X Factor.
Yes, the most watched YouTube videos so far this year have revealed that we like to watch an eclectic bunch of things.
Half of the videos in the top 10 were homegrown – the strongest showing was from a Tui ad that showed a house being plumbed with beer, the next best a NZ Transport Agency drug-driving ad involving three “blazed” boys and a car. They were followed by X Factor New Zealand and New Zealand’s Got Talent spinoffs.
The most watched video overall was an official music video of The Fox (What Does the Fox Say) from comedic Norwegian brothers Ylvis. The video basically shows a bunch of people dressed as animals running about.
While we were dancing and singing along to some of these videos some of our own YouTube stars, such as Shannon and JamiesWorld, were making a splash on the world stage and attracting hundreds of thousands of global subscribers.
