Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s movie about Wellington’s thriving vampire community has had its premiere at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival.
What We Do In The Shadows reunites the Eagle vs Shark collaborators in an off-the-wall mockumentary into all aspects of the life of a blood sucker.
The movie’s debut was at a special midnight screening (overnight NZ time) at the Park City, Utah, festival, the brainchild of screen legend Robert Redford.
Promotional material for the movie said the movie covers the lives of vampires Viago (379 years old, played by Waititi), youngster Deacon (183 years old), Vladislav (862 years old, played by Clement), and Peter (8000 years old) who share a flat in the capital.
“Unfortunately for them, it’s hard to make new friends due to their constant thirst for blood.”
Wellington isn’t just full of vampires, though. “There’s a werewolf pack led by Rhys Darby, which will excite fans of HBO’s Flight of the Conchords series, some depressed zombie groups and, of course, witches and warlocks,” Aintitcool’s Eric Vespe writes.
“I was a fan of Clement and Waititi’s previous feature collaboration EAGLE VS. SHARK, but I get the feeling I’ll revisit What We Do In The Shadows ten times more. The jokes are just so out of left field, the blood flows in gushes of arterial spray and the complete random nature of the gags just tickle my funny bone in ways that I feel will hold up to repeat viewings,” he writres.
