Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement have done it again.
The first review of the pair’s latest project – vamp-comedy What We Do in the Shadows – has been published by influential entertainment magazine Hollywood Reporter.
And the film is a winner, says reviewer John DeFore.
The “very funny Kiwi take on vampire lore and its application to the modern world” has “ace writing and comic performances”, he says.
“The film’s pacing never flags . . . What We Do in the Shadows belongs to the creatures of the night, and anyone intending to hop on this particular subgenre bandwagon has a hard act to follow.”
The movie opened this week at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, United States.
Promotional material for the movie says it covers the lives of vampires Viago (379 years old, played by Waititi), youngster Deacon (183 years old), Vladislav (862 years old, played by Clement), and Peter (8000 years old) who share a flat in the capital.
“Unfortunately for them, it’s hard to make new friends due to their constant thirst for blood.”
Waititi and Clement are old friends from Wellington, both cutting their teeth with shows at Bats Theatre.
Their careers have diverged but been successful – Clement as one half of Flight of the Conchords and Waititi as a movie director, most notably with his hit film Boy.
But they have remained regular collaborators.
Waititi cast Clement in the starring role of his first feature, Eagle vs Shark, while Waititi was a guest director for an episode of Flight of the Conchords.
