Wellingtonian Cory Mathis has taken the top prize in the first Young Cartoonist Awards.
The illustrator and digital artist, currently studying illustration at the Learning Connexion in Taita, won $5000. The quality of illustrations entered in the competition, open for cartoonists aged 18 to 35, was surprising, judge Ian Grant said.
Jeff Bell, of Christchurch, and Toby Morris, of Auckland, were runners-up.
Their cartoons, alongside Mathis’, will be published in The Listener and displayed at the Alexander Turnbull Library.]
