Below are listed some current scams to avoid.
‘Free’ gas – A federal has ordered the company to cease this misleading advertisement immediately. In this scheme consumers were promised “free gas for life” upon purchasing a book from a selection offered online, the Federal Trade Commission said. “Consumers who attempted to buy the book ended up being charged a monthly fee for an online magazine and did not receive the promised free gasoline” the FTC said. Federal Judge said the Green Millionaire website can no longer offer “free” products and must clearly disclose how much consumers will be charged for its products.
Gold coins – After federal investigations into Gold International Incorporated, consumers may have 30 days to apply for refunds from the marketing firm, the Santa Monica city attorney’s office said in a news release. The company agreed in February to pay $5 million in refunds to consumers who were charged excessive fees for gold coins purchased from company. Consumers must apply for the refunds by May 22, 2012 to file for a refund at gold.smconsumer.org. The company has already paid out $4.2 million in refunds and set aside $800,000 for others who came forward before May 22, 2012.
