Tyree almost gave up on his new album Motivation.
”This album has certainly been a long time coming and with that time came many highs and lows,” says the South Auckland rapper and member of Smashproof of the six year gap since the release of his debut Now Or Never.
”I guess the most frustrating thing for me as an artist was having so many ideas and making some really strong starts (in regards to my recordings) and then not being able to complete them, which was normally because the
songs would lose me a little. By lose me, I mean I lost interest.
”The most rewarding thing I have now since I started this album is a young daughter named Mila and a happy family. I’m also more comfortable with the music I’m bringing out and I’m in a better frame of mind these days.”
The title of the album reflects reflects Tyree’s own real life struggles.
”Motivation – is the message that I wanted to send out to the world and really just try to uplift anyone,” he says.
”Let’s be real, there’s a great divide between living the life you want and the realities of living week to week. And i think the greatest struggle of all is with yourself – with your own mind.
”So I just want people to be motivated. I have my own saying. ‘It’s not how hard you get knocked down but how you keep going that matters’. My motivation came from all the great things in my life, my daughter, my family and where I’ve come from to where I stand today.”
Motivation features single Fighter, which features Smashproof crew mate Sid Diamond and Stella, a name to watch out for.
“Stella is a old friend whom I met at the gym. We got to talking and I found out that she was an aspiring artist,” Tyree says.
”I wasn’t really gonna get her on the Fighter hook, I just wanted her to reference it but it came out too good not to use. Why fix something that’s not broken
“She is one of the most focused people I have ever met – hungry and driven. I love being around people like her and I look forward to future songs we do together.”
