Everyone’s favourite “mozzies” look set to return to New Zealand’s television screens, with Mediaworks announcing The GC has been given the go ahead for a second season.
Funded by Te Mangai Paho, the second season will follow many of the same tanned and trendy Maori whose contribution to society included a new meaning for the word “aunty”.
In a statement, MediaWorks said production was expected to start later this year.
The first series of the GC caused controversy, particularly after it was revealed New Zealand on Air contributed $420,000 towards the making of the show, which some critics labelled “a low brow version of Jersey Shore”.
The show’s creators said the first season was a realistic look at Maori today.
It depicted a group of young Maori who were living, working and partying, (mainly partying), on the Gold Coast.
According to MediaWorks, more than two million people tuned in to watch throughout the first series, with each episode gaining an average viewership of about 333,400 people aged five and over.
