Roger Federer sent out an ominous message to his rivals by claiming the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati with a straight sets demolition of Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday. Federer was playing his second tournament since returning to the ATP Tour circuit after becoming the father of twin girls and was back to his peerless best ahead of the U.S.
Murray overtakes Nadal to reach Montreal final
Andy Murray clinched the No. 2 world ranking in men’s tennis despite struggling with his serve in Saturday’s semifinal victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Montreal Masters. The British third seed won 6-4 7-6 (10-8) in the Canadian hardcourt event to overtake Rafael Nadal and set up a final clash with either American fifth seed Andy Roddick or sixth-seeded Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro.
Tennis: Nadal returns with doubles victory
Rafael Nadal made his return to competitive tennis after a two-and-a-half month layoff with a doubles victory at the Rogers Cup in Montreal. Nadal teamed up with fellow Spaniard Francisco Roig to beat the Serbian pairing of Novak Djokovic and Dusan Vemic 7-5 6-4 in a first round match. World number two Nadal has not played since losing in the fourth round of the French Open to Robin Soderling, troubled by tendinitis in both knees which caused him to skip his defense of the Wimbledon title.

Juan Martin Del Potro edged top seed Andy Roddick to successfully defend his Legg Mason Classic title in Washington with a 3-6 7-5 7-6 victory in Sunday’s final. The Argentine produced five aces in the deciding tiebreaker which he took on his fourth match-point when the Hawk-Eye review system upheld a forehand winner. “I did my best services ever in my life,” Del Potro told the official ATP Tour Web site www.atpworldtour.com after making 19 aces in the grueling two and a half hour match
