Hurricane spares Bermuda; heads for New England
Hurricane Bill skipped Bermuda and set its sights on the Massachusetts coast Saturday morning, with forecasters warning people from New England to Newfoundland to be on alert. The storm is expected to pass off the coast of New England late Saturday or Saturday night and approach Nova Scotia on Sunday, the National Hurricane Center said.

The government’s cash-for-clunkers program appears to be working like a charm, so time to shut it down. Good old Washington! Offering rebates of up to $4,500 to folks trading in their gas guzzlers for new, more fuel-efficient cars, the program has been everything a stimulus package ought to be: a quick and efficient way to spur private-sector spending in support of a worthwhile civic goal. Congress put up $1 billion for the program, which it found under the sofa cushions in a room where they were meeting to discuss this year’s proposed $3.5 trillion budget.

Draco Malfoy and the slimy kids of Slytherin couldn’t have wreaked more damage on Harry Potter than a bunch of commando guinea pigs did to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince this weekend. G-Force, the live-action and CGI action comedy, earned $32.2 million this weekend at the North American box office, besting the $30 million take of the sixth Potter film, according to the usual movie-studio estimates of the weekend frame.
