Phelps unhurt after Maryland car crash

Olympic gold medal swimming champion Michael Phelps was involved in a traffic accident in Baltimore, Maryland, on Thursday night, but was uninjured, police said. Phelps was driving one of two vehicles that collided at an intersection about 9 p.m., police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told reporters at the crash scene.

Court: Confession won’t stop Mumbai terror trial

Despite a confession by the sole surviving suspect in the Mumbai terror attacks and his lawyer’s offer to withdraw from the case, an Indian court said Thursday that it will continue with the trial. Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, 21, stunned the court Tuesday when he admitted his role in the attacks on India’s financial capital, which began on November 26 and continued for four days and three nights. Prosecutors said Kasab’s guilty plea was an attempt to deflect attention from his alleged handlers in Pakistan.

Schwarzenegger, lawmakers reach agreement on budget

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and California legislators announced a tentative deal to eliminate a $26 billion deficit Monday evening, with state agencies looking at billions of dollars in cuts as part of the plan. Schwarzenegger said the “basic agreement” includes no tax increases, which his fellow Republicans in the state Assembly and Senate had refused to support.

Blast hits police building in eastern Pakistan

An apparent suicide attack reduced a police building, with at least 200 people inside, to rubble in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on Wednesday. At least 10 people were killed and 80 wounded, reported CNN affiliate Geo-TV. CNN could not immediately confirm the casualty count.

Space shuttle suffered ‘minor’ damage at launch

Boy, 11, accused of killing father’s pregnant girlfriend

An 11-year-old boy is facing adult charges in the shooting death of his father’s pregnant girlfriend, authorities said Saturday. Police say the boy shot Kenzie Marie Houk, who was eight months pregnant, once at pointblank range in her farmhouse in western Pennsylvania. The boy, whose name was withheld by CNN because he is a juvenile, was charged with one count each of criminal homicide and homicide of an unborn child in the death of Houk, 26, Lawrence County District Attorney John Bongivengo told CNN
