Credit Suisse Q2 profits climb by 29 percent

Credit Suisse on Thursday became the latest major bank to report a strong second quarter showing as its net profit rose by 29 percent to 1.57 billion Swiss Francs ($1.41 billion.) In a statement the Swiss banking giant attributed its performance to a “reduced-risk business model providing the basis for more sustainable, high-quality, lower volatility earning.” Its Investment banking arm, which incurred much of the blame for the bank’s record losses last year, weighed in with pre-tax profits of 1.66 billion Swiss Francs ($1.55 billion). Overall earnings rose by 10 percent to 8.6 billion Swiss Francs ($8.07 billion) from 7.7 billion Swiss Francs ($7.2 billion) a year earlier.

Legend Watson backs British Open age limit

Tom Watson is backing a ruling to set an age limit of 60 for former champions to take part in the British Open – despite coming within a whisker of taking the title at Turnberry on Sunday – aged 59. Watson told CNN that the Royal and Ancient, who run the British Open, had made a “sensible decision and I concur with it.” It will mean that the eight-time major winner will be making his final appearance in the British Open at the ‘home of golf’ St.Andrews next year, but the American legend has no regrets.

Library fight riles up city, leads to book-burning demand

A fight over books depicting sex and homosexuality has riled up a small Wisconsin city, cost some library board members their positions and prompted a call for a public book burning. The battle has stirred much of West Bend, a city of roughly 30,000 people about 35 miles north of Milwaukee.

Injured Pietersen ruled out of Ashes series

England batsman Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of the Ashes series after undergoing surgery for an ongoing Achilles tendon injury. Pietersen was assessed by a leading specialist where the decision was made to undergo surgery which will rule him out of all cricket for six weeks. ECB Chief Medical Officer, Nick Peirce, said in a statement: “Following a consultation, involving scans and testing, with the world’s leading Achilles specialist, Kevin Pietersen underwent surgery on his right Achilles tendon.

Mumbai gunman suspect ‘ready to die’

The alleged gunman captured alive during last year’s Mumbai terror attacks told an Indian court Wednesday that he was ready to face execution. But prosecutors who are trying Mohammed Ajmal Kasab on 86 charges — including waging war against India — said they will hold off on recommending a sentence because Kasab has yet to disclose more.
