More cases of swine flu reported; WHO warns of ‘health emergency’

A potentially deadly new strain of the swine flu virus cropped up in more places in the United States and Mexico on Saturday, in what the World Health Organization called "a public health emergency of international concern." The most recent reports Saturday afternoon were of two confirmed cases of the virus in Kansas — bringing the number of confirmed U.S. cases to 11. Those joined nine confirmed cases in Texas and California and an apparent outbreak at a private school in New York City, where officials say eight children likely have the virus.

Family visits Craigslist suspect in jail

Family members of Phillip Markoff visited him in jail Friday for the first time since his arraignment on murder charges connected to the slaying of a woman he may have met through a Craigslist online ad. Markoff’s parents, brother, and sister-in-law visited him Friday, having to get through a throng of media members who gathered near the Boston, Massachusetts, jail. The mother of a 25-year-old woman killed in a Boston hotel more than a week ago said Friday that she will remain haunted by her daughter’s death for the rest of her life. “Our family has been devastated by the loss of our beautiful daughter, Julissa,” Carmen Guzman said in a statement released Friday, which would have been Julissa Brisman’s 26th birthday

Craigslist killing suspect seemed ‘all-American’

Friends and acquaintances of Philip Markoff, a medical student accused of killing a woman he may have met through a Craigslist online ad, described the 23-year-old as a model student. “My girlfriend actually rode the elevator with him a lot alone; it’s kind of freaking her out now,” said Patrick Sullivan, who lived in the same apartment building as Markoff in Quincy, Massachusetts, a Boston suburb. “She thought he was kind of the all-American, good-looking guy,” Sullivan said.

Ten Years After Columbine, It’s Easier to Bear Arms

Monday April 20 marks 10 years since Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold permanently etched the words Columbine High School into this nation’s collective memory. What happened that day in 1999 also seemed to wake America up to the reality that it had become a nation of gun owners — and too often a nation of shooters. The carnage in Littleton, Colorado — 12 classmates and a teacher before the killers offed themselves — and the ease with which the teenagers acquired their weapons seemed to usher in a new era of, well if not gun control, then at least gun awareness.
