France set to relax Sunday shopping ban
The French are in for a significant cultural shift next week if the Senate approves a new law from President Nicolas Sarkozy to allow more shops to open on Sundays. What seems routine in much of the Western world has been fiercely resisted in France, where Sundays have officially been set aside as a day of rest for more than a century and where a 35-hour workweek remains the norm.
Report on Sanford’s travel records expected soon
South Carolina’s attorney general said Thursday he expects a report showing whether Gov. Mark Sanford used any public money on private travels to be released soon. Attorney General Henry McMaster, a Republican who plans to run for governor in 2010, called for an investigation into Sanford’s travel records after the governor admitted he had visited his mistress more times than he previously disclosed.
North Korea vows to protect itself
North Korea vowed Wednesday that it "will take every necessary measure to protect its sovereignty" in the midst of 12-day U.S.-South Korea joint military exercises. “These war exercises were kicked off by the U.S. and the South Korean puppet war-like forces across South Korea at a time when the inter-Korean relations have reached the worst phase and the situation has grown so tense that a war may break out (at) any moment due to the reckless policy of confrontation pursued by the South Korean conservative authorities,” North Korea’s official KCNA news agency said
Stranded South Koreans allowed to cross border
A day after North Korea shut its borders at the start of U.S.-South Korea military exercises, hundreds of South Koreans who had been in the north were allowed to cross the border Tuesday after spending a day in limbo, an official in Seoul said. When North Korea took the action, 573 South Koreans were staying at the Kaesong industrial complex, north of the demilitarized zone
