Boat that can ‘think’ to cross Atlantic unmanned
The designers behind a "thinking" yacht are hoping to break a world record by sending it across the Atlantic Ocean without any human assistance. The four-meter boat, “Avalon”, was designed and built by an eight-strong team of third-year engineering students at Swiss science university ETH Zurich. Mia Farrow ended her liquid-only fast aimed at calling attention to the crisis in Darfur after 12 days as her health took "a downturn," according to her publicist. Farrow began her fast last month to call attention to the demand that “world leaders take immediate action and demand that international aid is restored” to Darfur, her publicist said. When Jon Bohmer sat down with his two little girls for a simple project they could work on together, he didn’t realize they’d hit upon a solution to one of the world’s biggest problems for just $5: A solar-powered oven. The ingeniously simple design uses two cardboard boxes, one inside the other, and an acrylic cover that lets in the sun’s rays and traps them. Black paint on the inner box, and silver foil on the outer one, help concentrate the heat.
