Q&A: Film director Bob Smeaton on remastered Beatles albums

Remastered versions of the Beatles catalogue will be released on Wednesday, giving listeners what the remaining members of “The Fab Four” say is the closest reproduction ever of how their music sounded in the studio. CNN’s Peter Wilkinson went to EMI’s legendary Abbey Road studios and spoke to Bob Smeaton, who directed the Grammy-award winning Anthology series on the Beatles, about a series of mini-documentaries that are included on each of the remastered albums.

Chinese mine explosion deaths climb

Rescue operations unfolded at a mine in eastern China on Wednesday, a day after a gas explosion killed at least 37 people and left dozens missing, state-run media reported. Search teams were looking for 42 miners who remain trapped after Tuesday’s accident, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing a spokesman for the Henan Provincial Bureau of Work Safety.

Big leap in stray dogs as recession bites

The number of stray and abandoned dogs in the United Kingdom jumped by 11 percent in the past year — the biggest surge in a decade — possibly because of the financial crisis, a British dog charity said Wednesday. Rights group: Israeli offensive killed mostly civilians

A human rights group says more than half of the Palestinians killed during Israel’s three-week offensive against Hamas in Gaza earlier this year were civilians, contradicting an Israeli military claim. Israel had said that more than 60 percent of those killed in the military campaign were “terror operatives.” The Israeli human rights organization B’tselem released figures Wednesday, saying that, of the 1387 killed, 773 “did not take part in the hostilities” and, that of those, 320 minors were killed
