THE DEVIL PUT DINOSAURS HERE Alice In Chains (Universal) Twenty five plus years on and, in musical terms, Alice In Chains are getting to be dinosaurs. That they’ve survived this long, even after the death of core members Layne Staley and Mike Starr is partly because they are great riff merchants and are a lot closer to being a heavy metal band than their grunge roots might suggest.

BRIGHT SUNNY SOUTH Sam Amidon (Warner) The fourth album by the husband of Beth Orton and son of Peter and Mary Alice follows in the footsteps of his parents with Sam Amidon’s signing to iconic US label Nonesuch. The reference points go deeper on this sweetly stark collection of folk song interpretations, which Amidon says were part of the soundtrack of his youth with particular reference to the gorgeous style of shape-note singing found on Weeping Mary, a track which his parents recorded in 1979.

BLACK PUDDING Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood (Liberation) Collaborations seem to bring out the best in the restless soul of Mark Lanegan, who is probably best known for his time with Screaming Trees and Queens Of The Stone Age. His two albums where he played Nick Cave to Kylie Minogue with Isobel Campbell are among his finest work, while his latest partnership with Duke Garwood, who as the guitarist for The Quietus gives Ben Harper a run for his money, is probably his most challenging and sonically adventurous album to date.
