Report: Nearly One in Five Owe More Than Homes Are Worth

How’s this for odds: If you have a house in Las Vegas, there’s a 58% chance you owe more on your mortgage than the place is worth. Nevada, of course, is ground zero for the real estate bust — but it’s hardly alone in having truckloads of “underwater” homeowners. As of December, 19.8% of mortgage holders nationwide had negative equity in their houses, according to a new report by loan-tracker First American CoreLogic.

Ex-ICC chief: Future bleak for Pakistan cricket

It will be years before international cricket can be played again in Pakistan following the brazen attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore, the former chief of cricket’s world governing body said Wednesday. Ehsan Mani, who was president of the International Cricket Council (ICC) from 2003 to 2006, also said the attack puts plans for the the 2011 World Cup — scheduled to be played in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and two other countries in the South Asia region — in doubt. Pakistani Mani, who served for seven years on his country’s national cricket board before taking over at the ICC, said Tuesday’s attack poses a “huge threat” to the subcontinent’s most favored sport

Marines sack 4 over deadly California plane crash

Deferred maintenance, faulty decisions by controllers and the pilot of a fighter jet contributed to an aircraft’s fatal crash into a San Diego, California, neighborhood in December, the Marine Corps announced Tuesday. The commander of the fighter squadron involved in the crash, its top maintenance officer and two others have been relieved of duty as a result of the crash investigation.

Can "Compassionate Presence" Help a Group Get Away with Murder?

The crackdown on the Final Exit Network, a Marietta, Georgia-based group accused of assisted suicide, revived a right-to-die debate that was fueled in the 1990s by Jack Kevorkian, the Michigan doctor who assisted in the deaths of 130 terminally ill people. But Final Exit claims its volunteers do not perform assisted suicides a la Kevorkian, who was convicted of second-degree murder and went to prison for giving a lethal injection to a man suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease.
