Major Mexican drug cartel suspects arrested, officials say

A top Mexican drug cartel suspect has been arrested along with 12 accomplices, including five women, federal authorities said. Rodolfo Lopez Ibarra, known as El Nito and believed to be a top lieutenant in the Beltran Leyva cartel, was arrested Monday at an airport in Nuevo Leon state, said the Mexican National Defense secretary. Along with the suspects, officials said they also confiscated a Cessna 550 airplane, two cars, a large quantity of drugs and cash, firearms and a hand grenade

Hospital fined for breach of octuplet mom’s privacy

The hospital where a California woman gave birth to octuplets in January has been fined $250,000 by the state because nearly two dozen medical workers, including doctors, illegally viewed her medical records, according to state health officials. Kaiser Permanente’s Bellflower hospital, where Nadya Suleman’s eight babies were born, revealed in March that 15 employees lost their jobs and eight others were disciplined for improperly accessing her computerized medical records. There was no evidence that information from the medical files was leaked to the news media, which has intensely covered Suleman’s story, according to Kathleen Billingsley, deputy director of the California Public Health Department’s Center for Health Care Quality.

Europe experiences worst quarterly GDP fall

Europe experienced its worst quarterly drop in GDP in the first three months of the year, shedding 2.5 percent as German exports tumbled and investment plummeted across the 27-country bloc. European Union statistics released Friday showed German GDP fell more than any quarter since the country’s 1990 reunification, falling 3.8 percent from the last quarter of 2008. French GDP also slipped by 1.2 percent compared to the previous quarter, while Italian GDP fell 2.4 percent, the country’s heaviest decline since 1980.

Legal fight brews over ‘Farrah’s Story’

As Ryan O’Neal walked the red carpet at the premiere of "Farrah’s Story," he stopped every few feet to answer reporters’ questions about Farrah Fawcett’s battle with cancer. CNN’s Douglas Hyde was at the end of the line and the last to interview the actor, who was almost in tears after a string of intense explanations about his longtime companion’s condition.
