Biden announces $1.3 billion for Amtrak

Vice President Joe Biden continued the administration’s rollout of the recently passed economic stimulus package Friday, highlighting $1.3 billion in federal funding for Amtrak. The money for the rail service, which carried almost 29 million passengers in the previous fiscal year, will go primarily to infrastructure repair and improvement. The $787 billion stimulus plan includes a total of $8 billion for improvements in rail service, a crucial investment to help ease traffic in the congested northeast corridor running from Boston, Massachusetts to Washington, Biden argued.

Report Says 1 in 50 U.S. Kids Are Homeless

Even before the financial and home foreclosure crisis hit full stride, the number of homeless children in America had reached an alarming level. The National Center on Family Homelessness released a report today that estimates that one in every 50 American children was homeless between 2005 and 2006. That totals roughly 1.5 million kids.

U.S., Syria find ‘common ground’ in diplomatic talks

The United States and Syria found a lot of "common ground" on which to cooperate in the Middle East, the State Department’s top Middle East official said after talks in Damascus. But envoy Jeffrey Feltman on Saturday warned to “keep expectations in check” as Washington and Damascus re-engage after several years of strained relations.

Spain: Ski chairlift cable breaks injuring 17

A chairlift cable broke at a ski resort in southern Spain on Monday, injuring 17 skiers, CNN partner station CNN+ reported. Monday’s commuters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; New York; and Boston, Massachusetts, could face a nightmare with blowing and drifting snow, freezing temperatures, gusty winds and periods of sleet and freezing rain. The Northeast is expected to receive 5 to 15 inches of snow, forecasters said.
