Bone fragment found near the California home where Jaycee Dugard is said to have been confined for 18 years is “probably human,” a sheriff’s spokesman said Tuesday. Investigators said they found the bone last week on a neighbor’s property in an area that Dugard’s accused captor and rapist, Philip Garrido, had access to

The Man Who Organized Woodstock
For three days in August 1969, 400,000 people gathered on a dairy farm in upstate New York to listen to rock ‘n’ roll. The Woodstock Music and Art Fair boasted performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Who and Jefferson Airplane. But the festival is most famous for exuding a harmonious, we-are-all-one attitude that rain, traffic jams and overcrowding could not dispel.
Children forced into cell-like school seclusion rooms
A few weeks before 13-year-old Jonathan King killed himself, he told his parents that his teachers had put him in "time-out." “We thought that meant go sit in the corner and be quiet for a few minutes,” Tina King said, tears washing her face as she remembered the child she called “our baby … a good kid.” But time-out in the boy’s north Georgia special education school was spent in something akin to a prison cell — a concrete room latched from the outside, its tiny window obscured by a piece of paper. Media, diplomats again barred from Suu Kyi trial
Myanmar’s government once again barred diplomats and journalists from the trial of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Thursday, after allowing them in for just one day. About 20 diplomats and 10 journalists were permitted by the country’s military junta to view the proceedings Wednesday, which lasted just over an hour. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate is being tried on allegations of subversion.
Myanmar to let diplomats meet with Suu Kyi
In an unusual move, Myanmar’s military government will allow diplomats to meet with opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Wednesday at the end of the day’s proceeding in her continuing trial. Russian, Singaporean and Thai officials are expected to meet with the Nobel Peace Prize laureate later Wednesday, said a diplomatic source in Yangon, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Scientists piece together human ancestry
Scientists hailed Tuesday a 47-million-year-old fossil of an ancient "small cat"-sized primate as a possible common ancestor of monkeys, primates and humans. Scientists say the fossil, dubbed “Ida,” is a transitional species, living around the time the primate lineage split into two groups: A line that would eventually produce humans, primates and monkeys, and another that would give rise to lemurs and other primates. The fossil was formally named Darwinius masillae, in honor of the anniversary of Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday
