Burnley win play-off to reach Premier League

Minnows Burnley have become the smallest town to have a team in the English Premier League, after securing promotion by defeating Sheffield United 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley. Wade Elliott’s 13th-minute strike proved enough as Burnley, a north-west town of only 80,000 people, made their dreams come true in what is billed as the ‘richest match in football’ because of the potential rewards that come with playing in the Premier League. Burnley were one of the original 12 members of the Football League, when it was formed in 1888, and they will now be playing football in the top flight for the first time since relegation in 1976.

Wolfsburg win first German league title

Wolfsburg sparked wild celebrations when they clinched their first German Bundesliga crown after thrashing beaten UEFA Cup finalists Werder Bremen 5-1 on Saturday. Gilchrist blasts Chargers into IPL final

Captain Adam Gilchrist blasted the fastest half-century in Indian Premier League history to lead the Deccan Chargers into the final on Sunday with a comfortable six-wicket victory over tournament favorites Delhi Daredevils. Jadson strike wins UEFA Cup for Shakhtar

An extra time goal from Brazilian midfielder Jadson ensured Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk won the last ever UEFA Cup final with a 2-1 victory over Bundesliga side Werder Bremen in Istanbul. Jadson’s strike from 15 yards out lacked pace, but Werder goalkeeper Tim Wiese failed to save the shot and it slipped through his grasp to trickle over the line. However, there was to be drama in the final minyte of extra time when Werder striker Claudio Pizarro thought he had taken the final into a penalty shoot-out, but the goal was ruled out after the on-loan Chelsea forward was adjudged to have tugged back defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy before nudging the ball home.
