Fears trial of pregnant Lao prisoner may be delayed

A British legal charity expressed concern Friday after a report that the trial of a pregnant British woman jailed in Laos would be delayed. The Vientiane Times, an English-language newspaper in Laos, reported Friday that the case of Samantha Orobator “needs further investigation to prove how she became pregnant while in prison before the case can come to court.” Orobator, 20, was jailed last August at the Vientiane airport for allegedly carrying about half a kilogram of heroin. She is more than five months pregnant, and legal aid charity Reprieve — which has worked on her case — has said that is possibly the result of rape while in prison, perhaps by a guard

Nigerian militants declare ‘all-out war’

A Nigerian militant group tangling with government forces in the country’s southern oil-producing region on Friday declared "an all-out war" after what it said was a deadly bombing raid on civilians. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, in e-mail messages to reporters, said it sank six army gunboats, destroyed three others, and captured three in the restive Niger Delta region. “Many soldiers have been killed and the military has made a hasty retreat,” said the group — which is calling on “men of fighting age to enlist” in its fight against government forces.

Authorities release pictures of suspects in 3-year-old’s abduction

Police in San Bernardino, California, released pictures of two suspects in the abduction of a 3-year-old boy who was taken at gunpoint from his home last weekend. Briant Rodriguez has been missing since May 3, when two Hispanic males armed with handguns burst into the home, tied him up, along with his mother and four siblings. They ransacked the home before leaving with Briant, a small amount of cash and some personal property, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Cindy Beavers said.
