Dragon*Con brings out enthusiasts’ inner geek

It’s Geek Pride Week in Atlanta as thousands of fans take over four downtown hotels for Dragon*Con, an annual celebration of science fiction, fantasy, comics and gaming. Where else — OK, other than San Francisco or New Orleans — are city streets shut down for a ragtag parade of zombies, superheroes, robots, Klingons and Middle Earth dwellers Where else can comic book collectors rub shoulders with movie stars, vampires, alternate-history speculators and Harry Potter look-alikes, all while taking part in a lively game of Godzilla Bingo The whole thing is a bit of a shock to college football fans in town for the season-opening game between Alabama and Virginia Tech, one of whom called it a “freak show.” But those aliens grow on you after a while.

Chelsea to appeal FIFA’s player-transfer ban

English Premier League side Chelsea have said they will mount the “strongest appeal possible” following the transfer ban placed on the club by world football’s governing body FIFA. The punishment, which would prevent any new member joining the squad until 2011, was dished out after the club were found to have “induced” Gael Kukuta to breach his contract in a transfer from French league side Lens in 2007

UEFA to investigate Eduardo diving incident

Arsenal striker Eduardo could face a two-match Champions League ban if European football’s governing body UEFA decide to charge him with diving. UEFA disciplinary officials are reviewing the incident when the Croatia striker won a penalty against Celtic on Wednesday before deciding whether he will be charged. A UEFA spokesman told Press Association Sport: “We are reviewing the match to see whether a disciplinary investigation should be launched.” Under UEFA rules, if charged and found guilty Eduardo could face sanctions up to a two-match ban in European competition.

Violence mars West Ham clash with Millwall

A man was stabbed in the chest and 13 people were arrested after violence marred an English League Cup tie between Premier League side West Ham and east London neighbors Millwall. The 44-year-old man was stabbed in Priory Road, a few yards from West Ham’s stadium as fans clashed with police before and after the match; police say he is now in a stable condition. During the match, which West Ham won 3-1, fans fought with police and stewards inside the stadium and play was temporarily suspended when numerous supporters invaded the pitch.

Small plane crashes near high school football field

A small plane crashed Friday near an Ohio-area high school during a football scrimmage. Spectators at a practice game at Harrison High School watched from the bleachers as the plane went down at 8:08 p.m. ET, said police officer Jennifer Coyle, who witnessed the incident

With the shock death of Daniel Jarque – the Espanyol captain who suffered a cardiac arrest after training on Saturday – fans were left wondering how a man in such peak condition could endure a fate typically associated with the ageing and obese. The incident comes almost two years after fellow Spaniard, Sevilla’s Antonio Puerta, collapsed in the first half of his team’s 4-1 victory against Spanish league rivals Getafe and died three days later aged just 22.
