Stoner rules Rossi to launch MotoGP title bid

Ducati rider Casey Stoner saw off world champion Valentino Rossi to triumph in the delayed first MotoGP race of the season and complete a hat-trick of wins in Qatar. The curtain-raiser was postponed 24 hours until Monday after torrential rain saw the floodlit race in Qatar called off at the last moment. Masters: Campbell’s roaring start gives him lead

American Chad Campbell has a one-shot lead over countrymen Jim Furyk and Hunter Mahan after launching the best opening birdie salvo seen at the tournament. Campbell hit five birdies over the opening five holes to leap up the leaderboard and looked on target to equal or better the course record of 65 — nine under par — before bogeying the final two holes. His opening run was one better than Ken Venturi’s four-birdie start in 1956

Legend Palmer gets 73rd Masters under way

American legend Arnold Palmer got the 73rd Masters tournament at Augusta under way on Thursday by hitting a ceremonial drive up the fairway on the par-four opening hole. Palmer, who will be 80 this year, then retired to watch the action, with 1991 champion Ian Woosnam and American pair Chez Reavie and Briny Baird the first grouping off the tee. Former Masters winners Sandy Lyle, Craig Stadler, Ray Floyd, Gary Player and Woosnam were all among the early starters and all dropped shots over the early few holes.
