Formula One racing is a bit like evolution governed by an appeals committee: Winning races has long been relied on engineering innovations that give a race car that extra microsecond advantage, while the teams left in the dust cry foul and demand that the sport’s governing body, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile , rule those innovations out. FIA supremo Max Mosley had hoped to tamp down what he calls the sport’s “financial arms race” by imposing a $66 billion annual spending cap on teams, but instead he appears to have provoked a walkout that could see some of the sport’s major names, such as Ferrari and McLaren, create a rival championship with fewer restrictions — and take the sport’s lucrative TV audience with them.

Fans pay homage to Hillsborough victims

Thousands of Liverpool fans marked the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster in a special memorial service at Anfield on Wednesday. Ninety six supporters died on April 15, 1989 before an FA Cup semifinal between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest at Sheffield Wednesday’s stadium, one of the worst tragedies in sporting history. Chris Brown and Rihanna record duet

Singer Chris Brown has recorded a song with his reported girlfriend, Rihanna, just days after charges were filed against him for allegedly assaulting her, the record’s producer said Thursday through a publicist. The producer, Polow Da Don, said the singers completed a duet earlier this week, but released no other details, said his publicist Laura Wright. “My heart goes out to both Chris and Rihanna for what has happened in the past,” he said
