The disappearance of an Air France flight from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Paris, France, remains a mystery, but those involved in the search said it is likely that the plane’s 216 passengers and 12 crew members are dead. Among those on board were a member of Brazil’s former royal family, a one-time performer with the Riverdance troupe, a Rio city official, executives from major international companies and an 11-year-old British schoolboy. Pedro Luis de Orleans e Braganca, 26, was a descendant of the family that ruled Brazil until 1889, a branch of the former Portuguese royal family.
GM poised for bankruptcy, agrees European selloff
The future of thousands of car industry jobs in Europe remained uncertain Monday as General Motors prepared to file for bankruptcy after reaching a deal to sell off its European operations, including German automaker Opel and UK-based Vauxhall. GM will file a bankruptcy petition at 8 am ET (12 pm GMT), paving the way for a de facto government takeover, according to a source with direct knowledge of the bankruptcy proceedings.

Dutchman Jol appointed new coach of Ajax
Eredivisie giants Ajax Amsterdam have announced that Martin Jol has signed a three-year contract to coach the club, starting from July 1. The 53-year-old Dutchman moves from German side Hamburg, where he had recently secured a European place with a fifth-placed Bundesliga finish — as well as leading the club to the semifinals of this season’s UEFA Cup. Jol has also coached Den Haag and Roda — with whom he won the Dutch Cup — in his homeland.

While California’s Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld a ban on same-sex marriages that voters voters passed in November, the fight will undoubtedly go forward. The ruling by the court allows about 18,000 same-sex marriages performed before the ban to remain valid. The decision was met with chants of “shame on you” from a crowd of about 1,000 people gathered outside the court building in San Francisco on Tuesday.
