Category 4 hurricane bearing down on Baja California
Hurricane Jimena — a powerful Category 4 storm with winds of 145 mph (230 kph) — moved across the Pacific Monday toward the southern portion of Baja California, forecasters said. As of early Monday, Jimena was about 395 miles (635 kilometers) south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center
World population projected to reach 7 billion next year
The world’s population is forecast to hit 7 billion next year, the vast majority of its growth coming in developing and, in many cases, the poorest nations, a report released Wednesday said. A staggering 97 percent of global growth over the next 40 years will happen in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the Population Reference Bureau’s 2009 World Population Data Sheet.

Cyclone kills scores in India, Bangladesh
At least 87 people have been killed in a powerful cyclone that slammed Bangladesh and neighboring India, officials said Tuesday. Some 59 deaths occurred in Bangladesh when Cyclone Aila struck Monday, said Sultanul Islam Chowdhury, a deputy secretary with the country’s ministry of food and disaster management. More than 2.4 million people have been affected and at least 34,000 homes destroyed, he said.
