Thousands flee as wildfire rages

A wind-whipped wildfire raged on Thursday evening, scorching more than 2,700 acres in California, forcing more than 12,000 Santa Barbara County residents to evacuate, and damaged or destroyed at least 75 homes. The fire, which started Tuesday, had engulfed mansions in the coastal community’s foothills.

U.N. wary of second wave of swine flu

A shutdown of public venues in Mexico City is likely to be lifted by Wednesday, despite caution by U.N. health officials that a second wave of the swine flu virus could "strike with a vengeance." By early Monday, the number of cases worldwide stood at 985, with 26 deaths. Twenty-five deaths were reported in Mexico — the epicenter of the outbreak with 590 cases.
