Rifle used in museum shooting too old to trace, official says

It is not possible for authorities to trace the rifle used in this week’s shooting at the Holocaust Memorial Museum to the original purchaser, a law enforcement source said Friday. The source, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation, said the weapon is a Winchester Model 6, .22 caliber rifle — a type of gun manufactured between 1908 and 1928 — long before records were kept on gun purchases. Authorities also were checking to see if the weapon had been used in any other crime, the source said.

Blast kills cleric who denounced suicide attacks

A moderate Muslim cleric who denounced suicide attacks as forbidden by Islam was killed Friday in a suicide attack on his mosque in Lahore, authorities said. Sarfraz Ahmed Naeemi was the first imam in Pakistan to issue a fatwa, or religious edict, against suicide attacks in Pakistan. On Friday, a suicide bomber approached Naeemi as he left the Jamia Naimia Mosque and religious school.

Iranians head to polls in crucial vote

Iranian voters began casting ballots Friday in a colorful and passionate presidential election pitting incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against Mir Hossein Moussavi, the leading reformist candidate. The polls opened at 8 a.m. local time (11:30 GMT) and will stay open for 10 hours, but that time could be extended.

WHO to consider declaring swine flu pandemic

The World Health Organization scheduled an emergency meeting for Thursday to decide whether to declare a global swine flu pandemic as confirmed cases of H1N1 virus continue to soar worldwide. By early Thursday morning, the U.N. health agency had recorded more than 27,700 cases in 74 countries, with 141 deaths.

Mexico removes official who oversaw day-care center

Mexico’s Institute of Social Security, which oversaw the day-care facility where 44 children died in a fire last week, removed its director in the state where the tragedy occurred, the state-run news agency Notimex reported. Arturo Leyva Lizarraga, director of the agency in Sonora state, was “separated” from the agency Wednesday to “facilitate the investigative process,” according to Notimex.
