Terry keeps England on track for 2010 finals
John Terry kept England’s charge to the 2010 World Cup finals firmly on track when he snatched a dramatic 2-1 qualifying victory over Group Six rivals Ukraine at Wembley on Wednesday. England have now won their first five qualifiers under new coach Fabio Capello, but it looked as though their run could end when Andriy Shevchenko struck a shock equaliser for Ukraine after 74 minutes. It was skipper Terry came to the rescue, sidefooting home from a couple of yards five minutes from time following a trademark David Beckham free kick.
Atletico stun Barcelona as Real close up
Barcelona missed the chance to re-open a seven-point lead at the top of the Spanish Primera when they crashed to a shock 4-3 defeat at Atletico Madrid on Sunday. With Real Madrid winning 2-0 at Espanyol on Saturday, it leaves Barca just four points clear of their arch-rivals at the top, having led by 11 points after a long unbeaten run. But defeats at Espanyol and now Atletico, who move up to fifth with the victory, have undermined their title charge and given defending champions Real a glimmer of hope.
Hiddink takes charge at Chelsea
English Premier League side Chelsea confirmed Thursday that Guus Hiddink will take charge until the end of the season following the dismissal of Luis Felipe Scolari. The veteran Dutchman currently coaches the Russian national team, which he led to the semifinals of last year’s European Championship. Chelsea said it thanked the Russian Football Union for its “understanding and cooperation.” It was unclear whether Hiddink would continue as Russian coach.
