Iran attacks against U.K. tap into centuries of suspicion

With protests flaring on the streets of Iran, Tehran has singled out one foreign power for particular criticism — and it’s not the one you might expect. Why Europe Is Talking Tougher than Obama on Iran

While President Obama has chosen a deliberately measured response to the contested Iranian election, European leaders have been far less restrained in their comments. On June 16, four days after the presidential election, French President Nicolas Sarkozy called the contested poll a “tragedy” and added that “the extent of the fraud is proportional to the violent reaction.” That same day, the Italian Foreign Minister, Franco Frattini, said the violence in the streets and the deaths of protesters were “unacceptable.” Three days later, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown referred to “the repression and the brutality” in Iran.

The Springboks, inspired by some impressive forward play — particularly in the scrum — looked to be cruising to a comfortable win as they led 26-7 with just 12 minutes remaining. But the match-fit Lions, who had won all six of their games prior to Saturday’s opening Test, scored two late tries against the visibly-tiring home side –who were hanging on when the final whistle was eventually blown
