Police testify against Mumbai shooting suspect

A handful of policemen armed only with bamboo sticks overpowered a suspected gunman in last November’s terrorist attacks on India’s largest city, prosecutors said Tuesday in the trial of the sole surviving suspect. Prosecution witnesses testified that the suspect, Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, shot and killed Assistant Police Inspector Tukaram Omble, who had intercepted Kasab’s car during the four-day siege in Mumbai, according to special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam. Mumbai attack suspect admits he is adult

The lone surviving suspect from last year’s Mumbai terror strikes Wednesday inadvertently admitted he is 21 years old, contradicting his earlier assertion that he was a juvenile, attorneys said. The admission means Mohammed Ajmal Kasab can now face trial on charges including waging war against India, murder and attempted murder.

Baghdad car bombings over 4 hours kill 48

Six car bombings in four hours killed 48 people and wounded 81 in various Baghdad neighborhoods Wednesday, according to Iraq’s Interior Ministry. In a separate incident, five people were killed and three wounded by a roadside bomb south of Baghdad, a ministry official said. Most of the deaths came when three car bombs parked at separate but nearby marketplaces exploded in quick succession in the eastern Baghdad Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City, killing at least 45 people and injuring at least 68, the ministry official said.

U.S. warm to Venezuelan overture to return ambassadors

Venezuela President Hugo Chavez is considering naming an ambassador to the United States, signaling a shift in the historically tense relations between the two nations — one that the Obama administration welcomed. “It is possible we will begin evaluating the designation of an ambassador in the United States,” Chavez said in a statement Saturday after the meeting of leaders and representatives from 34 countries at the the fifth Summit of the Americas.
