Nadal stays on course for fifth French title

Rafael Nadal breezed into the last 32 of the French Open with a straight sets 6-1 6-4 6-2 win over Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia on Wednesday. It was a routine victory for the top-seeded Spaniard who was securing his 30th straight win at Roland Garros and is bidding for a record fifth straight French Open crown.

England launch ‘transparent’ World Cup bid

English Football Association hierarchy promised a "transparent" World Cup bid on Monday when they launched the nation’s attempt to host the 2018 finals. FA chairman Lord Triesman was joined by David Beckham, Wayne Rooney and Prime Minister Gordon Brown at Wembley with officials anxious not to repeat the mistakes that cost England the 2006 tournament. Bid chief executive Andy Anson believes the failed 2006 bid was guilty of “arrogance and complacency” and while Triesman stopped short of repeating the accusation, he feels the FA must learn from their mistakes

The story of Yaojin: Rebuilding a quake village

The two-story buildings in Yaojin are tall and straight – they look well built and solid. People now live an incredibly normal life here, just 17 miles from the epicenter of the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that had flattened their village and left nearly 90,000 dead or missing one year ago this week. All across the quake zone, reconstruction appears to be moving at a quick pace, though many survivors still live in shacks and prefabricated homes
