Bolt eases through to second round in Berlin

Usain Bolt coasted into the second round of the world championships 100 meters as arch-rival Tyson Gay secured the quickest time of the first set of qualifiers in Berlin on Saturday. His time of 10.20 was modest by his own incredible standards and perhaps confirmation that the track in the Olympic stadium is not conducive to record breaking in the sprints

Lochte victory breaks Phelps’ medley record

Michael Phelps has lost his men’s 200-meter individual medley world record — a mark he has held for six years — after fellow-American Ryan Lochte claimed gold in the world swimming championships in Rome in a new best time. Lochte came home first in a time of one minute 54.10 seconds, bettering the mark of 1:54.23 set by Phelps when winning Olympic gold in Beijing on August 15 2008. Hungarian Laszlo Cseh was second in 1:55.24 and American Eric Shanteau third in 1:55.36.

Should Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid go through, the Spanish giants will have spent an incredible $230 million on just two players in less than a week. On Monday, Brazilian playmaker Kaka joined the Madrid club from AC Milan for a fee of around $100 million, while Ronaldo will cost $130 million — a world record.

Boat that can ‘think’ to cross Atlantic unmanned

The designers behind a "thinking" yacht are hoping to break a world record by sending it across the Atlantic Ocean without any human assistance. The four-meter boat, “Avalon”, was designed and built by an eight-strong team of third-year engineering students at Swiss science university ETH Zurich. The students are planning to take the boat to a robotic sailing regatta in July, before launching it into the Microtransat Transatlantic challenge in early September
