Malawi halts nursing brain drain

Like most African countries, Malawi has suffered from a severe shortage of nurses and key health workers. In the past, workers in the tiny southeast African nation of just 13 million inhabitants have been lured abroad by the promise of higher wages and better working conditions. But, the country best-known as the homeland of Madonna’s adopted children now has another claim to fame: It has succeeding in halting — at least for now — its crippling brain drain of nurses.

Britain downgrades terror threat level

Britain on Monday downgraded its international terror threat level from "severe" to "substantial." The notice was issued by The Joint Terrorism Analysis Center (JTAC), which operates independently of ministers. According to the British Home Office Web site, the change means that a terrorist threat remains a strong possibility and an attack might occur without further warning. JTAC assesses the threat from international terrorism by considering all relevant intelligence and information.

Israeli military to probe Gaza campaign allegations

The Israeli military plans to investigate claims by Israeli soldiers that Palestinian civilians were killed and Palestinian property intentionally destroyed during Israel’s recent 22-day offensive in the Gaza Strip. The claims were made by Israeli soldiers who were graduates of a pre-military course at an Israeli college.
