Indie actor Greta Gerwig, who scored a Golden Globe nomination for her role in offbeat comedy Frances Ha, has been lined up as the lead for the hotly anticipated How I Met Your Mother spinoff.
A pilot of How I Met Your Dad was given the greenlight last year, with the award-winning original series is set to complete its ninth and final season on US TV screens in March.
Gerwig will play Sally, described as “a female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life”. The character discovers she has nothing in common with her husband of a year, and turns to her friends and family for support.
Gerwig is a somewhat surprising choice for the highly popular mainstream show given her relatively low-key indie profile. However commentators have said TV executives are excited at the prospect of copying the path of another hipster queen Zooey Deschanel, who transitioned to huge TV success with New Girl.
How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas will write and executive produce the new show as a joint effort with Up All Night, Saturday Night Live and Modern Family writer Emily Spivey. Gerwig is also expected to write and produce.
