Henry Cavill is happy his Superman character gave up red briefs.
The 30-year-old British actor plays Clark Kent in Man of Steel.
In this new Zack Snyder directed adaptation, Superman is not wearing the traditional red underwear normally found on the outside of the superhero’s costume.
Cavill believes modern youngsters would have made fun of the tight underpants.
“Kids now are growing up without any knowledge of the previous incarnations of Superman,” he told British newspaper The Sun.
“They would probably look at him and say, ‘Why is he wearing his underwear on the outside!'”
Cavill is in awe over his role as the classic superhuman character.
The star feels incredibly privileged to take on such an iconic part.
“You see yourself standing there in the suit, with the cape and the ‘S’ shield on your chest, and you see people looking at you going, ‘Wow! Okay, this is Superman.'” he explained.
“And you are looking at yourself going, ‘Wow! I’m Superman!’
“There really is no other feeling like it. It’s truly unique and something I will carry with me till the day I die.”
While at the Leicester Square premiere of Man of Steel in London on Wednesday Cavill marvelled at all the adoring fans.
Fellow Brits Christian Bale and Andrew Garfield have taken on the roles of Batman and Spider-Man in recent years.
Cavill doesn’t know why UK actors are now scoring so many action roles.
“I don’t think it’s anything particular about us Brits, but we seem to fit the particular of the directors for superheroes,” he said.
