As the story unfolded of a bus monitor being taunted to tears by a group of students in Greece, N.Y., the Internet’s collective heart bled.
People responded to the senior citizen’s misery by setting up a web site to recieve donations to send her on a well-deserved vacation. And people responded, perhaps because they recalled their own pain inflicted upon them as youths or adults, perhaps some felt guilty because they have been past offenders, or maybe they couldn’t bare the thought of their own mother or grandmother having to work past social security age and then facing that sort of treatment.
Whatever the reason, donations have surpassed $500,000 with 29 days left to go, some people are asking: Does she really deserve it?
Most are answering, if anyone deserves to be handed an amount like that… she certainly is one who does.
Although some of this money may be well spent in donations to some sort of sensitivity training for young bullies and some to programs aimed at assisting their victims.
Let’s face it: That kind of cash can go a long way — 5,000 goats for starving African families, a year’s tuition for a dozen underprivileged kids at Harvard, a new gold-flecked hairpiece for Donald Trump. Just sayin’.
