Sneak peek at one of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s last roles

A glimpse of one of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s last films has emerged, with a trailer for stylish thriller A Most Wanted Man out now.

It is based on the 2008 book by the master of spy novels, John Le Carre. Hoffman plays Gunther Bachmann, who runs an ethically dubious anti-terrorism squad in Hambug. “German intelligence needs a job to be done that German law won’t let it do,” he explains in the clip.

In what looks to be a dark, sinister thriller set against a grey German backdrop, the plot sees a Chechen Muslim taking refuge in Hamburg who becomes a pawn in a network of terrorism and the intelligence agencies battling to track it.

The clip has a clear theme of intelligence forces working with the philosophy that the end justifies the means. At the end, Hoffman asks ominously: “To make the world a safer place, isn’t that enough”

Hoffman is backed by the high quality cast of Rachel McAdams, Robin Wright and Willem Dafoe. Helming the production is Anton Corbijn, director of the acclaimed Joy Division biopic Control and most famous for his work as a photographer and music video director, particularly with U2 for whom he created the stark Joshua Tree album images.

A Most Wanted Man premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, amid one of Hoffman’s last public appearances before his tragic death in February, and is set to get its official US release in July.

Other Hoffman films ahead include God’s Pocket, a drama about a man who attempts to cover up the accidental death of his stepson, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.
