Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield would like to see his character fall in love with a guy.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he recalls a conversation he had with a producer about Spider-Man’s long-time love, Mary Jane Watson. “I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ. And I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude’ Why can’t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality It’s hardly even groundbreaking! So why can’t he be gay Why can’t he be into boys”
It’s unlikely the guy he was thinking about was Amazing Spider-Man 2’s new villain, Electro, although there is something homoerotic about their pairing on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.
The mag nabbed the first official picture of Jamie Foxx as the weird-looking Electro and there’s definitely a lot of unresolved tension between him and Spidey as they square boxing match style.
Mind you, there’s little room for subtlety in the Marvel Universe, not with all those city-flattening fist-fights and mad plans to conquer worlds and enslave humanity.
Foxx’s super-charged villain even has a lightning bolt on the sleeve of his costume (because nothing says “I can shoot electricity bolts out of my finger tips” better than a lightning bolt).
Alarmingly, Foxx’s villain looks like the cheesy Mr Freeze played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the awful Batman and Robin.
Let’s hope he won’t be dropping Arnie-style electricity themed puns throughout the movie:
“I’m going to hit you until it hertz.”
“Spider-Man, don’t you keep up with current affairs”
