Sheen: Lohan is a genius

Charlie Sheen is “rooting” for Lindsay Lohan because he thinks she’s an “absolute genius” who lost her way.

The actress has been filming a cameo this week on Sheen’s US sitcom Anger Management. She is taking on this project before she enters a court-ordered rehab programme.

The actor has been a long supporter of Lohan and even gifted her US$100,000 to help pay off her tax debt.

He spoke to Entertainment Tonight about his affection for the troubled starlet.

“There is a reason that I root for [her], because we fell in love with this little girl that was just an absolute genius and had this great light about her and that’s still there,” the actor said.

“You can’t extinguish that. I root for her because when you’re that talented it just doesn’t go away. Sometimes your appetites get in the way.”

The 47-year-old TV star has suffered substance abuse problems of his own.

Although Sheen can relate to Lohan’s troubles, he confesses he is still worried about the actress’ recovery.

“You have to be. But I think she seems a lot more focused now than she was five, six months ago,” he said.

Sheen had a very public meltdown which led to his dismissal from hit sitcom Two and a Half Men in 2011, but he thinks producers were a little more forgiving of his mistakes. His show Anger Management was greenlit not long after the ordeal.

“I, not to insult her because I’m who I am and she is who she is, I got things a little bit quicker or had better opportunities, better timing. They let me off the hook a lot sooner than they seem to want to do with her,” he explained.

Lohan remains on probation after pleading no contest to charges of reckless driving and lying to police investigating her June 2012 car crash in Santa Monica, California.

She accepted a plea deal that includes 90 days in a stay rehab facility, 30 days of community labour and 18 months of psychiatric therapy.

Sheen did not address reports Lohan was late to set on Tuesday and struggled with her lines.

Lohan is expected to check in to a treatment centre by May 2.
