The sun has yet to set on Palmerston North boy Jacob Neave’s ecstasy after being invited on stage by rock legend Bruce Springsteen.
The 12-year-old schoolboy is still in shock after performing with The Boss to Waitin’ on a Sunny Day in Auckland on Sunday, which his father recorded and uploaded onto YouTube.
Jacob said he used his own pocket money to attend the concert after he heard his father was going, because he didn’t want to miss seeing Springsteen live.
“I’m a big fan and I know it’s not really kids’ music but I like rock and western music,” he said. “It was actually the first concert I’ve been to, although my dad has been to a few other Bruce Springsteen concerts, but that was before I was born.
“I don’t really have a favourite song but I would probably say Born to Run.” Jacob said the concert was everything he had imagined but he remembered his father’s advice to take everything in “so it will be with me for years”.
“I was quite shocked that he brought me up because it doesn’t happen a lot,” he said. “My mum said he sang that song because I was there, he only sings it when he sees kids and brings them up.
“Before he did that he came down where I was in the front and held my hand and started singing to me.”
Jacob sang and danced to Waitin’ on a Sunny Day on stage before being hauled onto Springsteen’s shoulders and given a pat on the head.
But Springsteen had another surprise up his sleeve for Jacob later in the show – two souvenir guitar picks.
“After I had been up there he came around singing a different song and he saw me and gave me a smile and reached into his pocket and gave me some picks,” he said. “I’m never going to sell them, they’re just too special to me.”
