Kiwi funnyman Rhys Darby, who played the hapless band manager and consulate attache Murray in Flight of the Conchords, has been spotted filming with the Modern Family team on Sydney’s streets.
Darby was seen with Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who play Cam and Mitch respectively, around Woolloomooloo and the city as production began on the Australian special on Wednesday.
He’s believed to be playing a TV talk-show host Fergus, a character who is friends with Cam and Mitch. It’s the role that earlier this week Kyle Sandilands claimed he had turned down due to laziness and lack of interest in acting.
Fergus acts as Cam and Mitch’s informal tour guide while the family are on holiday in Australia.
The casting call for the role describes a ”narcissistic character” who used to be mates with the couple while living in the US. Producers were seeking an actor ”with amazing comedy chops”.
Darby, whose credits include Yes Man, The Boat That Rocked and Arthur Christmas, most recently appeared in NZ vampire horror-comedy What We Do In the Shadows, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January.
