Review: The Naked and Famous

The Naked and Famous

The Powerstation, Auckland, 16 May 2014

It was the perfect homecoming for the electrifying Naked and Famous.

Thom Powers strutted on to the stage at The Powerstation with his hood up like a heavyweight boxer entering the ring. He and the rest of the five-piece band only had one thing on their minds – a knockout performance. And oh boy, the crowd never stood a chance. The Naked and Famous were swift, powerful and the champions of the night.

The Auckland band came home off the back of a sumptuous performance at the Californian festival, Coachella, and a mammoth tour of the States. But regardless of how high they’ve climbed it clearly meant a lot to the band to once again be playing on home soil.

Alisa Xayalith was as cute as a button and with her sweeter than honey voice she dominated the stage and held the happy and hydrated crowd in a state of rapture.

The band started strong, thumping out the rollicking A Stillness, a tune that was written to be performed live. If that folkish guitar beat reverberating through the very marrow of your bones doesn’t get you smiling then nothing on this earth will.

They followed up with Hearts Like Ours, the first single off the new album, In Rolling Waves, which was released last year.
