Queens of the Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails have added a show in Wellington to their Australasian tour.
The two American alt-rock elder statesmen last year announced gigs in Auckland and Christchurch. The Wellington show will be on March 20 at the TSB Arena.
The relationship between QOTSA and NIN is no secret. They have played more than 30 shows together in the United States and have teamed up for several recordings over the years, including an appearance by NIN’s Trent Reznor on Kalopsia from QOTSA’s latest album, Like Clockwork.
To determine who will close each gig, the bands will toss a coin each night. Brody Dalle will open the shows. A punk-rock goddess in her own right, Dalle fronted early-2000s underground sensations the Distillers and later the less aggressive but still feisty Spinnerette.
She has been married to Queens of the Stone Age linchpin Josh Homme since 2007.
Homme said when the Australasian tour was announced that he “demanded” to perform in Christchurch.
The group was scheduled to play in Christchurch two days after the February 22, 2011, earthquake.
“We were headed there the day after the quake happened,” Homme said.
“I don’t often take the credit for such things, but I demanded that we come to Christchurch as part of this tour. I come from earthquake territory, too. I get it.
“We don’t want to just play; we want to help in some way, too.”
Money raised from T-shirt sales on the tour would be donated to Christchurch, he said.
During a routine operation on his leg in 2010, Homme died on the operating table before being revived, and he said the experience and long recovery affected him deeply.
“Life gets black and white really quickly,” he said.
“One of the things I learnt is that people pull away at those bad times, and it’s the worst thing you can do.
“To avoid playing in Christchurch is a total crime. I can’t wait to get there and finish what we started.”
