Patea Maori Club meets Viago the vampire

Kiwi hit Poi E and vampire Viago, of What We Do In The Shadows, have at least one thing in common – both have been resurrected.

The creature of the night, played by Taika Waititi, has joined forces with the Hurricanes to celebrate the Patea Maori Club’s hit on its 30th anniversary.

The South Taranaki social club will be performing in the halftime show at the team’s upcoming game against the Crusaders on June 28.

To promote the game, the Hurricanes called in Viago, star of the vampire mockumentary, set for its Wellington premiere tonight.

“It’s a little known fact that vampires have been involved in the Wellington rugby community for quite a few years now,” Viago said, licking his lips.

“People often wonder what happens to players like Ma’a Nonu and Piri Weepu when they’re finished with the teams. They think they go up to play with the Blues or other clubs, but that’s not really the case. They taste a lot like creatine [a bodily compound also used in athletic supplements].”

Poi E featured in Waititi’s 2010 flick Boy, which saw the song rise to No 3 in the charts for two weeks, 26 years after it first hit No 1.

At the time, Waititi also released a video for the number, in which he performed a dance fusing haka moves with Michael Jackson’s Thriller dance.

With a group of Hurricanes players, Viago filmed a short video yesterday based on these steps – ones the team often struggled to master. “Hopefully they put a little bit more practice into their rugby,” he said.
