Monae has secret Obama video


Janelle Monae can blackmail Barack Obama any time she wants, because the American R&B artist apparently has a “top secret” video of the US president dancing.

Obama has revealed that Monae has in her possession a clip of him trying to keep up with her and Usher on the dance floor.

According to Variety.com, Obama made the humorous remarks during a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee held at the Los Angeles home of Shonda Rhimes, the creator of the ABC drama Grey’s Anatomy and gritty political thriller Scandal.

Obama joined about 450 people for Wednesday night’s soiree, for which tickets cost between US$1000 and US$32,000 depending on whether guests fancied eating dinner at the president’s table.

During his speech to the crowd which included Scandal actress Kerry Washington, Obama reportedly let slip that Monae is in possession of reliable evidence of presidential dancing.

“Janelle has performed at the White House, like, 15 times,” Obama was quoted telling the audience.

“There’s going to be an official Janelle Monae room in the White House. We love her … And I have to say nice things about her because she may be the only person in possession of a video in which I try to keep up with her and Usher on the dance floor.

“Now, this is top secret,” he continued.

“She has promised that this will never be released. But she can blackmail me at any time.”

Monae, who was in the audience, called out to Obama “I love you!”.

He replied “I love you back”, but then added, “You do have that video, though, don’t you”

Obama then reportedly asked the 28-year-old Monae to confirm his silky D-floor skills.

“Now, tell the truth, though, Janelle. I wasn’t bad, though, was I I’m just saying … Let me say I did not drop in splits. But I did bust a move. That I did do.”

The friendly blackmail talk, which could see Monae land a role in Cabinet before Obama is done at the White House, all went down in Rhimes’ backyard.

The 44-year-old screenwriter, director and producer has reportedly donated nearly US$60,000 to the Democrats in recent years.

Doco looks at Aaron Swartz: The Internet’s Own Boy


He might not have had the profile of a Steve Jobs, Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg, but Aaron Swartz left behind the significant technological legacy.

Involved in the development of the web-feed format RSS, the organisation Creative Commons and the social news site Reddit, Swartz took his own life early last year after a draining two-year battle with US authorities over alleged illegal activities.

His death sparked outrage against the US Government’s copyright laws, other out-of-date legislation, and its increasing use of surveillance.

Document-maker Brian Kippenberger spent all of 2013 trying to piece together what went on and the result is The Internet’s Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz, which is screening here as part of the New Zealand International Film Festival.

Kippenberger said he first heard about Swartz when American computer programmer and internet “hacktivist” was arrested in early 2011 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology police on breaking-and-entering charges, after systematically downloading academic journal articles.

“That was the beginning of a two-year legal nightmare for him,” Kippenberger said.

“I was following people who had run afoul of the law in this way for my previous film We Are Legion (The Story of the Hacktivists), but it was notable to me that there weren’t too many people following Aaron’s story and I wondered why

“Then I was on a panel with his ex-girlfriend Quinn Norton a week after he died. I started talking with her and that became the start of real outpouring of anger and frustration.”

Keen to understand what led to Swartz taking his life, Kippenberger began interviewing his friends, colleagues and family.

“It was tough talking to people who had gone through a lot of emotions, but we were always very respectful and I think people wanted to talk about it and air their thoughts,” he said.

Frustratingly for Kippenberger and his team, the Government was less forthcoming.

“A lot of the stuff in the film is the result of formal requests and people pushing, but getting the Government to talk on camera about this They just don’t do it.

“I just wish they had come clean about what they were doing and what they wanted from Aaron.

“They don’t look good in this film or more broadly.”

In keeping with the spirit and ethos of its subject, the documentary is available under a Creative Commons licence on the Internet Archive, Kippenberger said.

“We think that Creative Commons is one of the paths that could bridge the gap between two worlds that have been at odds with one another,” he said.

“On one hand you’ve got these big content creators who put people in jail for ‘pirating’ music – heck even printing a web page is technically making a copy.

“Then you’ve got the artists who do all the work which takes time and money.
“Creative Commons offers an interesting middle ground – you remain the copyright owner but you can choose to grant various licences. For example, it can’t be used commercially but if you share it with somebody, they’re not going to come after you for piracy.”

Kippenberger said that while he hoped the film gave people a good sense of what Swartz was facing, a lot of unanswered questions remained.

“I hope people take away a number of things,” he said.

“I hope they’re angry about the US criminal justice system and it sparks some talk of reform, because it’s clearly broken.

It gives an enormous amount of power to prosecutors – they have incredible leverage to bring forced pleas, as shown by the fact that 90 per cent of people end up pleading out.

“I also hope the film engages people on the topic of outdated computer laws.

“The Internet is the place where we live – it’s not okay that Congress and their equivalents in other countries don’t understand the internet anymore. Certain [laws] haven’t been updated since the 1980s.”

On a more upbeat note, Kippenberger hoped Swartz’s story inspired others to follow his lead and turn their skills to social good.

“After making his money from Reddit he really spent his time doing things in the public interest,” Kippenberger said.

“We all have skills and we all have tools. You don’t have to be a genius hacker to engage the world.”

The Internet’s Own Boy’ first Auckland screening is at 4.45pm today at the SkyCity Theatre, and in Wellington on Monday at 6.15pm at Miramar’s Roxy Cinema.

Virunga: Stunning Beauty and devastating Violence


More than 14,000 km away from New Zealand, on the border of a mineral-rich, conflict-riddled country known as the “rape capital of the world”, there is a national park for which men have laid down their lives. It is called Virunga.

This year, an eponymous documentary tells the story of those who seek to protect Africa’s oldest national park, a U nesco World Heritage Site perched on the northeast edge of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Virunga’s mythological beauty calls to mind a real-life Jungle Book meets The Lion King. Its rainforests, savannahs and wetlands are home to over half the species on the African continent, including about a quarter of the world’s mountain gorillas, which live in the shadow of the largest lava lake on earth.

The park bursts with life, yet death is omnipresent. Conflicts catalysed by the genocide in neighbouring Rwanda have resulted in more than five million lives lost in the DRC in the past 20 years. Today, Virunga is under perpetual threat from the nine rebel militias active within its borders, poachers, illegal charcoal traders, and corporations intent on exploiting its natural resources.

The film is set during the M23 rebels’ 2012 invasion of Goma, a lava-scarred city National Geographic once called “the world’s most dangerous”.

Of all the films in the Africa section at the New Zealand International Film Festival, “Virunga is the one where you get in the closest to the personal stories of people on the frontline”, festival director Bill Gosden says.

The film’s four protagonists have each sacrificed their personal comfort and safety for the park, which they believe is one of the DRC’s only hopes for lasting peace.
