Salem, OR resident Krystle Marie Reyes was arrested for filing fraudulent tax returns.
According to a probable cause arrest warrant, 25-year-old Reyes used Turbo Tax, a popular tax preparation software package, to file a faked 2011 income tax return that reported wages of $3 million and claimed she was owed a $2.1 million refund. The state authorized the refund, and Turbo Tax issued Reyes a Visa debit card with the full refund amount.
Apparently she lost two previously issued cards and had filed for her second replacement card. That was when her situation was brought to the attention of Turbo Tax and then forwarded to the Oregon tax officials.
Reyes, whose criminal background check came up negative, has allegedly committed one of the largest tax scams in the sates history.
