Napier City Council is cutting the admission fee to entice visitors into the region’s museum.
The $18 million MTG (museum, theatre, gallery) building has been plagued with troubles since it opened last September.
It was found to be big enough to store only about 40 per cent of its collection and visitor numbers were well down on expectations.
Council chief executive Wayne Jack admitted today some “fine tuning” was needed which was why a thorough review had been undertaken.
The review suggested changing admission prices and looking into other storage options.
As a result, Jack said the council will consider relocating archives from MTG to the library building and look into additional storage at an off-site council location.
It will also investigate the design and preliminary costings of an additional storage facility.
Admission prices will come down from $15 to $10. It will be $7.50 for senior citizens and students.
The review also recommended MTG include more regional exhibitions and feature more Taonga Maori and Social History displays.
It wants the museum to increase its exhibition space allowing for more of its collection to be on show.
