Andy Murray on Sunday became the first player to win three times on the ATP tour in 2009.
The world number four defeated Novak Djokovic 6-2, 7-5 for the Sony Ericsson Open title. Murray’s win closed the gap between him and the world number-three spot, which is currently owned by Djokovic. The 21-year-old Scot is off to an impressive 26-2 start this year, and since last July his record is 57-7, best on the tour. Prior to his triumph in Miami he reached the final of the year’s first Masters Series event at Indian Wells – where he fell to Nadal. He won Masters Series titles on hardcourts in Cincinnati and Madrid last year, and reached the final of the U.S. Open in September.
